Ups and downs.

The past few days have been super good, and super bad.
Good stuff first!!!

Firstly, I am the new Vice President of CHUVU, the community health club at UVU. This means I'll be President next year. There are currently 60 members and I'm having a BLAST so far!

Second, I got to listen to Clarence Jones speak at UVU. He is the author of a large majority of the "I Have A Dream" speech by Dr. Martin Luther King. He was a close friend of MLK, and he served as his council and lawyer from the time he began to gain fame until the day he was assassinated. Clarence Jones is over 80 years old... he started singing us negro spirituals during his address. Such a funny old man. Something interesting I learned is that the end of MLK's speech where he gets into his "I have a dream"-ness was all ad lib, made up on the spot. None of that was written in the speech. SO AMAZING.

Third, I got this awesome fortune this week. Made my day.

Fourth, Clark and I had an awesome date on Saturday! We went to Nicklecade, turned 5 dollars into nickles, and went wild. We even won the jackpot on one of the games!!! It was only 97 tickets, but I've never won a jackpot before so it was a monumental occasion in my life.

Winning the jackpot!!!

Clark doing what he does best....

And we traded in all our tickets for Fruties! Best candy ever.

And now... for the bad.

Over the past few weeks I've been getting sick a lot. Numerous episodes complete with abdominal pains, general uncomfort, shaking, upset stomach etc... Well, tonight I drank two glasses of milk in a half an hour. After a little visit with the porcelain throne, Clark and I started to realize what's been going on.

Breakfast made me sick until I switched to cream of wheat a few weeks ago. MILK.
I got sick the other afternoon after an Oreo shake. MILK.
I had major abdominal pains that we thought were appendicitis the other night. AFTER EATING YOGURT AND DRINKING MILK.
I just threw up. MILK.
Having stomach pains again right now. FROM MILK.
Too many other events to mention. FROM MILK.

Sensing a pattern? It seems as if I've developed lactose intolerance over the past few weeks.
Anyone who knows me knows that I live on milk. And yogurt.
I'm doomed.
I'm going without dairy the next week to see if I get better, but it totally makes sense. After a bit of internet research and a conversation with my sister-in-law Kim (she's a registered dietitian) it is pretty obvious. I can't believe you can develop it this late in life, but apparently it can set it around teens and early adolescence. Praying that it's not the case but... pretty sure milk and I are no longer friends.

Hello almond milk.
Goodbye ice cream... and Frostys.... and shakes....
Guess I'll start being more healthy?

  1. Holy smokes I LOVE frooties. And good news--they don't have any lactose!! :) Other good news--different people can handle different amounts of lactose in their diet depending on the severity of the intolerance. Once you get the problem figured out, you can test the waters and see what dairy products in what amounts your body will let you eat. Ice cream may not be off the table forever!

  2. Ok I sure hope so because this morning I realized frozen yogurt would be out of the picture... almost had a meltdown in class. A pudding realization followed shortly thereafter. Hopefully it's not too bad... or I'll just take Lactaid like candy :)
